RAtionaleThe project aims to find ways of promoting educational outcomes associated with student employability by optimising their workplace experiences. That is, using these experiences to assist them develop the understandings, capacities and values required for employment in their selected occupations and readiness to practice them. This rationale acknowledges that workplaces have diverse requirements for occupational performance (Billett, 2001). So, students’ awareness of and knowledge about different workplace requirements is helpful when supporting their initial and ongoing employability. So, the proposed project is founded on the need to: i) optimise students’ practicum or work experiences, ii) augment their experiences and learning; iii) realise specific outcomes through those experiences and iv) given their variability, mediate the quality and kind of those experiences. Hence, the project’s rationale is to optimise the educational worth of practicum experiences now being widely provided in Australian universities. The provision of and engagement in these experiences often comes with considerable institutional and personal cost. Yet, long-standing evidence highlights the significant potential to generate key educational outcomes by assisting students draw on their work experiences (Cooke, Irby, & O'Brien, 2010; Grubb & Badway, 1998). Given work experiences are now widely provided for and engaged with by Australian higher education students, the aim is to optimise the learning potential of these experiences through the informed selection of post-practicum interventions.
